Archaeological evidence suggests thet the Mekong Delta and its immediate environs have been inhabited since prehistoric times. Scattered communities of Malay – Polynesian people – ancestors of today’s E De, Gia Rai and Cham ethnic minority communities – are believed to have been present here before the establishment of the first indianised states. Ethnic Khmers migrated into the wider area from either south west China or north east India in around 2000 BCE. Then, early in the first millennium CE, both India and China began to establish trading contacts in the region.
