Author: Trần Ngọc Thêm
This is the first systematic-typological study of Vietnamese culture by a Vietnamese scholar. Professor Thêm uses his broad knowledge and detailed research into many related fields – such as anthropology, ethnology, archaeology, Eastern and Western philosophy, history, linguistics, literature, and numerous other fields – to weave together holistic explanations of the origins, development, and modern forms of Vietnamese culture. The translation and its multiple rounds of editing involved both native-English and native-Vietnamese speakers cooperating to improve understanding and accuracy. Translator’s notes have also been added extensively within the text and in footnotes to clarify meanings and further explain concepts difficult for the Western reader to understand. This work will be of great benefit to academic researchers, but its written and translation styles also make it very accessible to the “popular” audience interested to expand or deepen their understanding of the cultures of Vietnam and the surrounding region.
